the Cat Empire go for the record

When a record 7 shows were sold out at Sydney’s Metro Theatre in September 1996, a benchmark was set that has never been challenged. Enter The Cat Empire, who in October this year will attempt to set a new record with 8 shows over 7 days, starting October 14.

The Metro record attempt is in celebration of the release of their new album ‘So Many Nights’ on September 22. The event will see hundreds of fans fly in from other states, and will be supported by The Bamboos, and a troupe of other performers.

The dates are part of a run of gigs that will also take the band to Perth, Adelaide, Noosa, Cairns and their home town of Melbourne, where they will play their 600th show on the eve of the album release. Incidentally, The Cat Empire hold the record at The Prince of Wales for 3 sold out shows in a row, which all sold out in a record 3 days in ’06.

The Cat Empire returned to the Aussie stage on the weekend at Splendour, introducing some of the new songs from ‘So Many Nights’, including the first single ‘No Longer There’. Until August 26, fans can purchase the CD single – which features 4 unreleased tracks and is personally signed by the entire band – for only $5. The Cat Empire are renowned for their live shows in Australia, and word has spread fast internationally. The band have spent most of the past 4 years traveling the world, and in the past year have sold more hard tickets than any other contemporary Australian band on the international touring circuit in the same period. In London alone they play to 10 000 people on every visit. Their crowds all over the world consistently double with each return. With records now released internationally, they have also become USA entertainment television favourites, with performances on Letterman, Leno and Craig Ferguson.

Most at home on a large stage, just a few of The Cat Empire’s overseas festival credits include Glastonbury (UK), Wireless (Hyde Park London), Rock am Ring and Rock Im Park (Germany), Paleo (Switzerland), Barcelona Jazz Festival (Spain), Eurokeenes (France), Womads all over the world, Summerstage New York, Summersonic (Japan), Montreal Jazz Festival, Bonnaroo (USA)…and hundreds of other enviable bills.

Back in Australia now, you can catch The Cat Empire on the following dates, with tickets on sale August 13.
