Splendour 08 First Announcement

A veritable feast of musical treasures from around the globe awaits when SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS returns to warm up your winter this Saturday 2nd and Sunday August 3rd at Belongil Fields in Byron Bay. From Akron, Ohio and Bristol, UK to Reykjavik, Iceland and the sunny Gold Coast, here’s a taste of the first acts lined up to thrill at SPLENDOUR 2008.

DEVO, WOLFMOTHER, SIGUR ROS, THE LIVING END, THE PRESETS, TRICKY, VAMPIRE WEEKEND, BEN LEE, COLD WAR KIDS, THE FRATELLIS, THE WOMBATS, PNAU, LAURA MARLING, THE VINES, THE GRATES, OPERATOR PLEASE, BAND OF HORSES, VAN SHE, THE PANICS, GYROSCOPE, MSTRKRFT, LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION, THE BROWN BIRDS FROM WINDY HILL, SCRIBE, THE MUSIC, THE GIN CLUB

To get all the detail about this impressive roll-call of talent, you’ll need to go to the brand new, fresh-out-of-the-box Splendour website at www.splendourinthegrass.com where you can not only read the full press release that went out this morning, but you can also let your mouse play with butterflies, a bunny, a frog and a side-steppin’ goose. It’s a freaky fairy-tale menagerie. And there’s no fruit in site (pun and misspelling intended), but see if you can spot the snail.

There’s another change in the offing with the Splendour website. For the first time, we’re going to allow you to regale us all with your sparkling repartee, banter, bouquets and brickbats on our very own Forum on the Splendour website. We’ll still have our myspace site http://au.myspace.com/splendourinthegrassfestival but if you want all the world to see your brilliant bon mot, then you’ll be able to when the new forum goes live very, very soon. Keep your eye on the website to see when the Forum launches so you can be among the first to post a comment and tell us OMFG, lol IMO Best. Festival. Ever. Or perhaps you could share your thoughts on the following news…

This year all tickets to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS will be sold online through the ticketing service, Qjump, via www.qjump.com.au Qjump is a newly launched online ticketing company whose parent company has 7 years experience providing web based ticketing services. Qjump sells tickets for many leading Australian events and venues and its website and custom built hosting environment has been specifically designed to meet the high capacity on-sale demands of events like Splendour.

In our efforts to improve and streamline the ticketing process, this year’s tickets will be delivered to buyers by email using Qjump’s print@home e-ticket. The benefits of this include reducing paper usage (remember how the tix used to come inside a folder inside an envelope?), greenhouse gas emissions (all those posties scooting about) and ticket scalping as well as reducing the cost of delivery for ticket buyers (no postage fee).

In other exciting news SPLENDOUR organisers can confirm the return of the GREEN TICKET which this year will go one step further in tackling climate change. This year the GREEN TICKET option will allow punters to neutralise their average carbon emissions over a 48-hour period (not just their travel emissions as was the case last year). Australians generate on average a total of 28 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions or 77kg a day. Each individual GREEN TICKET this year will neutralise 144kg of carbon (i.e. covering two days) making the ticket holder climate neutral for the duration of the event. To find out more about becoming carbon neutral visit www.climatefriendly.com

Tickets go on sale at www.qjump.com.au from 9am on Thursday 22nd May.

In keeping with SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS tradition, each year event organisers handpick a local community organisation to be the beneficiary of funds raised through a $2.00 (per ticket) contribution from every event ticket sold. This year the Splendour crew will split proceeds of these contributions between the Byron Bay Hospital and WIRES Northern Rivers. The hospital auxiliary will use the funds to purchase much-needed surgical equipment (an electrosurgical generator and an argon plasma coagulation unit) for the hospital, while WIRES (Wildlife Information and Rescue Service) will use their funds for ongoing public education and awareness campaigns and to purchase portable enclosures to be used in the rescue and care of injured wildlife within the shire.

In addition to a stellar line-up of music talent, our usual features will return to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 08. The G.W MCLENNAN THEATRE stage will be back along with the HEALING ELEMENT, a haven filled with alternative therapy and lifestyle outlets, market stalls, global food fair, bonfires plus a wine bar. The TIPI CIRCLE will return to its home in the forest and punters can also expect the return of the SPLENDID LOUNGE BAR, kooky iconoclastic performances and a smorgasbord of visual art.
