FATHER JOHN MISTY

…When you’re smiling and astride me I can hardly believe I’ve found you and I’m terrified by that

There will be a convergence of forces when Father John Misty takes the stage at The 25th Meredith around Sunset on Saturday Night, and I’m going to momentarily resist adjectives: There’s the man himself, there’s his music, and his band. Then there’s his popularity, and there will be anticipation, and excitement. And there’s Sunset, on the second night, in

the Supernatural Amphitheatre: the sweet spot.

“If anyone knows what to do with a sweet spot, it’s Father John Misty”.

Expectation, convention be damned. Father John Misty has ascended. He’s not working from a script, there’s no blueprint. His lucid looseness undoes custom’s blouse. He deals in true fun and freedom, flourishing almost perversely from a deep bedrock of brutal raw honesty and enlightened directness. He can also be filthy, and hilarious. His live shows are beyond everything. He’s wilfully out of bounds,

and you’re coming too.

Don’t give into despair
Cause I love you honeybear

FJM has been the revelation of recent cultural times. “I Love You, Honeybear” is the album of the year, his songs have become sleeper anthems, his interviews and TV appearances are merely opportunities to do something remarkable, and live performances are an experience beyond the sum of their parts, albeit that those parts are truly special (I’ve spent the morning trying to obsessively accrue them: superb spiritual singer; songwriter for the ages; soulful, hip-shaking no-rules showman, frontman for a cracking band; satirist, social commentator; banter king; romantic poet; novelist, philosopher, perfumer – Innocence, by Misty exists because “I believe very strongly in how young women smell, getting involved is a big cornerstone in our inactive democracy” – teller

of eternal truths, fibber of elaborate lies, film-scorer, chameleon, ideal husband, formerly-aspiring preacherman, and very human being).

Maybe love is just an economy based on resource scarcity

TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION

Where does Father John Misty start and Joshua Tillman end? Who cares.

BC

Josh Tillman was born May 3, 1981, and grew up in a deeply religious, “culturally oppressive” Evangelical Christian household in Rockville, USA. Until he was about 17, religious music was the only music he heard. His parents eventually permitted some that had a “spiritual theme”, like Bob Dylan, and a light was turned on.

He became a musician, worked odd jobs to fund it, was the drummer for Fleet Foxes and released solo albums under the name J Tillman, which were released by prestigious labels and well received. He was going ok.

But then came an epiphany.

“With the J Tillman touring I realised that I was more entertaining in my two minutes of between-song banter than I was in like five or six minutes of song, but I didn’t regard that banter as really being a moment of creativity, which ultimately it was…a very depressing realisation all of sudden became a very illuminating realisation, which was like ‘here’s where your gifts are, you don’t get to choose what you’re good at, use that’. Once I started doing that it reduced a lot of the dissidents that had previously been part of the creative process for me.”

What followed was a phase of highly imaginative output which supercharged his journey into the hearts and minds of modern lovers all over.

AD

On the first day, he created Father John Misty. In the first song as the new Him he sings:

Fun times in Babylon, momma they’ve just begun, Look out Hollywood, here I come.

It was the word, and the word was good. Ha!

He’s been on a wildly entertaining trip ever since, intrepidly chronicling his encounters with modern life’s small moments and big questions.

How many people rise and think
Oh good the stranger’s body’s still here
Our arrangement hasn’t changed
Now I’ve got a lifetime to consider all the ways
I grow more disappointing to you as my beauty warps and fades I suspect you feel the same

BYRON, SHELLEY, KEATS, MISTY

He can really sing, he can be hilarious, there’s rollicking good times in his shows, and the myth and mystique of the man are magnetic, but for me his ultimate gifts are his love songs.

This one completely kills me. It’s about (I think) absurd fickle chance, the tiny tenuous link that turns nothing into everything, and the nebulous dimensions of that diabolical deal:

I’ve become jealous, rail-thin
Prone to paranoia when I’m stoned
If this isn’t true love, someone oughta put me in a home Say, do you wanna get married
And put an end to our endless progressive tendency to scorn Provincial concepts like your dowry and your daddy’s farm?

For love to find us of all people I never thought it’d be so simple

Let’s buy a plantation house and let the yard grow wild until we don’t need the signs that say, “Keep out”

“I Love You, Honeybear is a concept album about a guy named Josh Tillman who spends quite a bit of time banging his head against walls, cultivating weak ties with strangers and generally avoiding intimacy at all costs.

In a parking lot somewhere he meets Emma, who inspires in him a vision of a life wherein being truly seen is not synonymous with shame, but possibly true liberation and sublime, unfettered creativity.

The album progresses, sometimes chronologically, sometimes not, between two polarities: the first of which is the belief that the best love can be is finding someone who is miserable in the same way you are and the end point being that love isn’t for anyone who isn’t interested in finding a companion to undertake total transformation with. I won’t give away the ending, but sex, violence, profanity and excavations of the male psyche abound.

My ambition, aside from making an indulgent, soulful, and epic sound worthy of the subject matter, was to address the sensuality of fear, the terrifying force of love, the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons in my own voice.

The massive, deranged shmaltz I heard in my head, and knew had to be the sound of this record, originated a few years ago while Emma and I were hallucinating in Joshua Tree; the same week I wrote the title track. I chased that sound for the entire year and half we were recording. The means by which it was achieved bore a striking resemblance to the travails, abandon and transformation of learning how to love and be loved; see and be seen. There: I said it. Blammo.”

With seven weeks left until Queenscliff Music Festival spills across one of Victoria’s most prized coastal locales, three weeks until ticket prices increase and a matter of days until the few remaining VIP tickets sell out, the festival announces two exceptional new international acts: Tim Chaisson from Canada (pictured) and Trevor Hall from the USA. QMF also wishes to advise that international artist Elliott Brood will no longer be performing at QMF, due to unforeseen circumstances. These two sought-after new acts will join the already extensive 2014 lineup, but before we introduce to you those two international talents who will add extra flair to the the 2014 experience, a BIG congratulations is in order for this year’s QMF Emerging Artist Grant Recipients: Aine Tyrrell and Sagamore!Aine Tyrrell has been granted $3000 toward marketing and publicity campaign for the the release of her debut album ‘Gypsy Daughter’, and Sagamore have been granted $4780 toward the recording of their debut album.QMF’s Emerging Artist Grant is just one example of the relationship between this festival and the community that hosts it, with an aim to kickstart the careers of local musicians in the regions of Geelong, Barwon South West and the Bellarine Peninsula. It is open to budding artists and is based on artistic merit and potential for sustainability beyond the funding period – there is no age limit. Importantly, it provides a platform for artists in the region to access recording time, new equipment or the right mentor for management or marketing. It’s just one big ol’ lump of good news this week from QMF, and the striking international talent new to this year’s line up is no small part of it.Roots--based singer/songwriter and multi--instrumentalist Tim Chaisson hits the QMF stage after a trail through 2013-2014 with a blaze of high points, including an East Coast Music Award for best Roots/Traditional Solo Recording of the year, a finalist spot in the Canadian Country Music Association’s Discovery Program, and a nomination for Singer/Songwriter Discovery of the Year Award presented by satellite radio SiriusXM’s lauded Coffee House channel. Now armed with a 2014 follow up to his award-winning 2012 album, produced by Bill Reynolds (Band Of Horses), Tim is one to circle on this year’s program!

Trevor Hall‘s rock-reggae tunes have featured on the Shrek the Third soundtrack and as the theme tune to American TV station CBS program ‘This Morning’, as well as making it onto a handful of music tastemaker charts. They’ve also caught the ear of other renowned artists and Trevor has joined sold-out tours with artists such as Steel Pulse, The Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, Matisyahu, Michael Franti and Colbie Callait. In 2013 at the age of 26, after touring consistently for ten years, Trevor decided to take a break from the stage and go on an extended pilgrimage to India. Afterwards he spilled all that he had learnt onto the page and into song. His next album is set to be released in 2014 – and Queenscliff gets to hear it live!

Muddy and familiar tracks lead into the room where no-one goes, only I know its true dimensions -
In a hotel on a burning shore, derelict and furnished by the war that no-one ever mentions

Give it all away, baby give it all away, nobody wants to hear about the price you pay, you’re a dog starved.

Everybody knows their own, stick to their imaginary zones to keep the information.
We only differ from the rat, given a stranger in the pack, in how we improvise to tear the strips from him.

Give it all away, baby give it all away, nobody wants to hear about the price you pay, you’re a dog starved.

Now do you play the beating organ for attention or to effect a gerrymander of the soul,
you hear the murmuring of mournful incantation “don’t re-enrol, don’t re-enrol”

Today you only have to play along,
or make it seem as though you tried,
Or did I ever only play along? Why would I?

Half an hour of rain, half an hour of sun,
In ode to violence the island sings its uncanny song
and I can only think I don’t belong, and is this oblivion, Is this oblivion?

And so the pattern will repeat,
see the same worm at the same sheet,
where all desires seem to wane or taper.
You say no worst, now there is none,
Look how the palimpsest has won,
how father breaches son like brick through wallpaper…

Give it all away, baby give it all away, nobody wants to hear about the price you pay, you’re a dog starved. Give it all away, I’ve got to give it all away,
I’ve got to give it all away,
Just a dog starved.

“A Dog Starved” is the second single to be released from the forthcoming Augie March album Havens Dumb. you can listen here [LINK]

The song was produced by Glenn Richards in Hobart and Melbourne and mixed by long-time Augie alumni Paul McKercher.

The band recently announced they were returning to action after a five-year hiatus, and that they had been putting together an album in the latter half of that break.

“A Dog Starved” was a track that arrived late in the album process: “ Blake, Manley Hopkins and Dylan Thomas all vie for the pedant’s ear in
this power pop excursion, not to mention Big Star, XTC and maybe more recently, via XTC, Field Music. For all that heavyweight arty dick swinging it was from a dearth of brawn and a surplus of brain in evidence at what
I’d mistakenly thought was the end of the project that “A Dog…” came, tail wagging. It became hurtfully clear that it was for me to go back into the pit and swing a little harder at the face, maybe even shirt off this time, do the shale dance into the hard rock. I wielded my brother’s old red hollow Silvertone and got some nice tones. Four days of basic tracking later we had four new songs, including this one.

MOSMAN ALDER
‘Humdrum Star’

“We find that we live on an insignificant planet of a hum-drum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people. We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and the depth of our answers.” – Carl Sagan
There are many voices, places and influences swirling in Mosman Alder. The Brisbane six-piece may have unified their debut album under the sweeping title taken from the life’s-work of an ingenious 80’s scientist and astronomer-turned-author, but for the most part, inspiration for the album was found slightly closer to home.

Weaving the band mates’ experiences of travelling overseas, the bitter sweetness of returning home, online pen-pals, sharing dog-eared books from Japanese expressionists, navigating through shyness and Arts schools and the inevitable searching that comes with figuring out life through your early twenties is underpinned by the band’s love of music, art, storytelling and ultimately, their own friendship.

Much of ‘Humdrum Star’ may have been written on German guitars and composed on separate trips across the globe as far flung as South East Asia and Scotland, but was performed and written, simply, by a band who look forward to practicing together.

Comprising of Valdis Valodze and Jackson Muir, who both sing and play guitar, pianist Katarzyna Wiktorski and violinist Robyn Dawson, who also make up the delicate back-up singing, bassist Liam Haug and drummer Damian Wood, like all good friends,Mosman Alder’s stories vary as to how they met – share houses and supermarket jobs aside – as well as differences in musical background as varied as heavy metal and classical training – they have together struck on the rare ability to combine their musical and song writing talents to make a distinctive sound.

While some bands would be out of their depth with a large ensemble, particularly the commanding use of piano and violin, Mosman Alder envelope the unusual instruments seamlessly and create a densely lush sound through the chaos of six members that shines just as brightly on headphones as watching the band perform live.

While the band’s debut EP ‘Burn Bright’ saw them exchanging yard work for a practice space, ‘Humdrum Star’ was recorded in the studio with Something for Kate’s accomplished front man and respected producer Paul Dempsey. Valdis accredits the stripped-back and refined new style to his tutelage – encouraging the band to swap instruments and singers for a textured and broader sound. After the album was polished, Paul announced the project to the world; remarking Mosman Alder were “…one of the best bands I’ve heard come out of Australia in a really long time”.

As lit by the kaleidoscopic colourful charms of sweeping violins, stripped back drums and winding guitars as it is by the sepia tones of sadness throughout the lyrics,‘Humdrum Star’ is an elegant and twisted coming of age tale.
The buoyant melody on ‘Germland (of Julien Charbonneau)’ juxtaposes with the brooding tale of loneliness as the beat carries Valdis to a happier place, while the swirling, rain-drop-like piano pours through Jackson’s words on ‘Home Again’ – the steady drum keeping the song afloat.

‘Colours’ and ‘Try Your Luck’ strikingly mark the band’s contrasting and fearless nature, the former delicate and metaphorical lyrics soaked in reverb and bass and the latter an unflinching tale of a chance meeting and love interest – the call and response refrain of Valdis and Robyn working perfectly for a dream-pop anthem, while Katarzyna provides the subtly sweet harmony.

On the stripped back and raw ‘Shine’ the reserved instrumentation allows Valdis’ baritone howl to drive the smooth song while they invoke their psychedelic-influences on tongue-in-cheek slow burner ‘God is Pissing on You’.

Armed with Valdis’ extraordinary baritone, Jackson’s raw, romantic voice and Robyn and Katarzyna’s honeyed backing vocals, set across the diverse instruments and melodies together weave a narrative as personal and mysterious as an open journal with illegible handwriting.

Whether it’s due to Mosman Alder’s unearthly influences, unflinchingly personal songs or bright and bold storytelling – one thing is for sure about this band and their courageous album ‘Humdrum Star’ – they’re going to be around for a long time to come.
Praise for Mosman Alder

“…. rich instrumental hooks again compliment the characteristic deep vocals and uplifting arrangements which have held the band in such high regard in recent times.”
★★★★★ – City and Sound

“A bold, twinkling hook kicks off ‘Germland (of Julien Charbonneau)’, doubling as a nifty reintroduction to Mosman Alder… ‘Germland’ is the first taste – a swooning intersection of Valdis Valodze’s supple baritone, Robyn Dawson’s prominent violin and baroque, bittersweet indie rock.”
Mess and Noise

“The track reiterates the beautiful melodies recognizable in their 2012 debut EP, Burn Bright. The single, although lyrically dark, retains a great air of hopefulness and vocal work that is undoubtedly enchanting.”

The announcement of The Melbourne Zoo Twilights 2014 program towards the end of last year received a red hot response from music lovers with three shows selling out well ahead of the start of the season. Tickets to shows featuring Jessica Mauboy, Xavier Rudd and James Reyne and Daryl Braithwaite sold out in record time, with other shows selling fast.

Melbourne Zoo Twilights offer a unique experience combining wildlife, stunning musical performances and gourmet delights, all within the spectacular grounds of Melbourne Zoo, under the blanket of balmy summer nights.

The 2014 program in alphabetical order….

BABBA, Charles Bradley, Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk, Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes, Dan Kelly, Daryl Braithwaite, Dick Diver, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Hotel California: Eagles Tribute, James Reyne, Jessica Mauboy, Josh Pyke, Katie Noonan’s Songs That Made Me, Max Rudd, Ms Murphy, Neko Case, Oscar Key Sung, Perfect Tripod Australian Songs, Queens Of The Outback: Priscilla Tribute, Saskwatch, Something For Kate, The Orbweavers, Thelma Plum and Xavier Rudd.

Tickets to all shows include full access to the Zoo: arrive early and enjoy a leisurely wander among the many exhibits. November will see the birth of a baby elephant, December will see the opening of the newly built Lemur Island exhibit and in October the Zoo welcomed Otana, a twelve-year-old male gorilla into the Melbourne Zoo family. Keeper talks at the Giraffe, Elephant, Wild Sea and Gorilla exhibits will take place before each show.

As with every Twilights season, all proceeds from the shows go towards the Zoo’s work to fight wildlife extinction. This year highlighting They’re Calling You – a campaign that aims to save gorillas in the wild through mobile phone recycling http://www.zoo.org.au/get-involved/act-for-wildlife/theyre-calling-on-you

One of the biggest threats to gorillas is the illegal mining of coltan, a mineral used in the production of mobile phones. Phone refurbishment helps lesson the demand for coltan mining in the gorilla habitat and raises funds for the Jane Goodall Institute to support Rangers protecting gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Melbourne Zoo Twilights is a fully licensed event, there are a number of food outlets within the Zoo serving delicious options from sit down dinners, to take away pizzas, snacks, coffee and deserts. You can also bring your own picnic, just no BYO alcohol or glass within the Zoo grounds.

This is Brother James’ debutante ball. Their presentation to the world. They’ve been peeking around the curtain, getting up the courage to take the steps out onto stage. And now they are! Working completely backwards, they have recorded an album, then thought ‘Well, I guess we should show people this thing.’

Don’t be fooled Brother James are anything but shy. With members from The Vasco Era, The Exploders, Rat & Co and Second Hand Heart, Brother James will smash their beer glasses blending a vintage of noisy garage rock and impassioned purpose.

‘Singalong’ is the lead single of their debut album that is due for release early 2014. Launching into high-velocity garage rock crescendos, lead vocalist Ted O’Neil taunts with urgency above crashing cymbals and guitars. ‘Singalong’ heaves between the gentle and fierce as they trundle out to peddle their wares.

An explosive tune with well-placed melodies Brother James gives a healthy nod to the past while pitching a hearty dose of gritty blues-rock. Performing at the Kennedys Creek Music Festival on October 26th and 27th with artists including The Murlocs, Fraser A Gorman & Big Harvest and Kashmere Club, Brother James cordially invite you to their debutante ball. They want to get messy and they want you to singalong.

Queenscliff Music Festival 22-23-24 November 2013

Applications are open for the 2013 Queenscliff Music Festival Emerging Artist Grant (funding up to $10,000) and will close at 5pm on Wednesday July 31. The grant is one helluva leg up for budding artists to get serious about putting themselves out there, using the funding boost as a serious kickstart.

2012 winners Tom Milek and Alister Turrill are still riding on the opportunities that opened up after the grant swung them into action.

Tom is racking up shows playing in live bands for the likes of Whitley and Hayden Calnin and with band Sleep Decade as well as working with producers Colin Leadbetter (Whitley, Willow, Dirt Farmer, The Go Set) and Lawrence Greenwood (aka Whitley) to record and produce his own album.

Alister recently sold out his CD launch show at Beavs Bar in Geelong on May 31 and is confirmed for the Echuca & Moama Winter Blues Festival, Bendigo Blues Festival and Blues on the Briars.

Both winners also performed at QMF 2012. Who knows what you could be doing this time next year if you got the grant to get your project in motion!

The Scholarship supports local musicians (in the regions of Geelong, Barwon South West and the Bellarine Peninsula) early in their career, in accord with the festival’s mission of Excellence, Discovery and Community. It is open to any artists who are in their early career and based on artistic merit and potential for sustainability beyond the funding period – there is no age limit!

So if you’ve been saving up for recording time, new equipment or holding out for an opportunity to get in front of the right mentor for management or marketing in the music biz then now is your chance to speak up!

After a sell-out debut earlier this month (featuring Paul Kelly and Bob Murphy at the top of their games) PRESENTATION NIGHT returns, by popular demand, to The Corner Hotel on Thursday 15th August. Put simply, the night is a conversation between a footballer who loves music, and a musician who loves football. It’s a once-in-a lifetime pairing between two greats in their respective fields.

Under the warm glow of the spotlight, TIM ROGERS (You Am I front man, great Australian songwriter, TV host, face of finals footy, life long Shinboner) and MATTHEW RICHARDSON (legendary Tiger, goal kicker, much loved commentator and music lover) come together to discuss their mutual love of music and footy at length in ways that are philosophical, funny and surprising.

Ably guided by music and sport obsessive FRANCIS LEACH (ABC Grandstand Breakfast), Presentation Night tackles the big issues: what similarities are there between the professional musician and the professional footballer? How do friendships form in footy and in music? We’ll take a look inside their kitbags, unearth some suprising trophies, talk about who scares them on the field or on stage. We’ll ask about Richo’s favourite albums and Tim’s favourite footballers – and much, much more.

Highlights of the first Presentation Night were many – Bob Murphy revealing his secret love for Lady GaGa; Paul Kelly playing a brand new song he’d finished that afternoon about the great Charles Perkins; a packed room sitting listening to vinyl spinning on stage together. It was a once-only experience for lovers of footy and music.

Their conversation will last longer than a tweet – and that’s the point. A bit of meandering and a touch of digression will be encouraged. It’s the equivalent of the slow food movement for Sherrin kickers and string strokers. It’s a chance to learn something new about the role that footy and music play in our protagonists’ lives, and with a bit of luck, maybe even a bit about how kicking a ball and writing songs can come to define us.

‘Presentation Night’ was born of desire to talk about two much-loved obsessions together in a public forum, and is an extension of the website of the same name. In a football and music-loving town where the two pursuits are so often followed with equal passion, it makes perfect sense. To have two greats in their field talk about their love of both capers together, gives us a chance to learn something new about them beyond the usual reportage of their endeavours. We can’t wait for a whole new take on it all with the towering talents of Richo and Rogers on stage together this time around.

THE FALLS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL, BYRON BAY!

The Falls Music & Arts Festival is hitting the road this December with their compass set towards the sunny shores of Byron Bay, New South Wales! The festival has been invited into the Shire by the local Byron Bay Council who have marked the event as a perfect fit for the idyllic beach town.

As an established fixture on both the Victorian and Tasmanian calendars, Falls Festival has been operating over the past 20 and 10 years in Lorne and Marion Bay respectively. The intimate size of each event allows for a beautiful community atmosphere fostered onsite, where days spent camping under the blanket of a stunning natural landscape are complimented by world class music and arts programming. Each event location has been carefully selected over time with an emphasis on regional destinations with stunning scenic, coastal surrounds.

“We’re really excited to be heading North and expanding this year, the Byron Bay location couldn’t be better suited to everything that has always encompassed Falls in Lorne and Marion Bay. Coastal and charming natural settings; a destination for our patrons to travel for.” Simon Daly, Festival Founder.

The Falls Music & Arts Festival has become a right of passage for many people across Australia with patrons returning year after year for their summertime holidays. This December, as Falls becomes thrice as nice, patrons will have a tricky decision on their hands – which destination to attend?

Marion Bay, TAS: December 29, 2013 – January 01, 2014

The Marion Bay site is picturesque, sitting right alongside one of the finest coastlines in the world. Taking a trip to Tasmania over summertime is the perfect way to experience all that the Apple Isle has to offer. The weather is fine, the terrain is beautiful, there is so much to see and do; with the foodies paradise Taste of Tasmania in full swing, MONA just a heartbeat away and the Sydney to Hobart taking pace – not to mention all of the stunning natural surrounds to be explored.

Byron Bay, NSW: December 31, 2013 – January 03, 2014

Look up ‘delightful beach town’ in the dictionary and Byron Bay is what you’ll find. Known for its relaxed beaches where the sand stretches beyond vision with waves that are near perfect. Drenched with mellow charms and the heart of a small town, 2013 will mark Falls’ maiden voyage to the area!

Lorne, VIC: December 28, 2013 – January 01, 2014

Located just off the winding beauty of the Great Ocean Road, Lorne is where Falls all began. Set amongst the mountaintops of the ancient Otway Rainforest surrounded by tall gums and green gullies, it’s a magical place to spend your days camping. Take some time either side of the festival to walk the trails and explore the native areas.

Any one of these three choices will make for an exciting summer break. The time to start planning is now, while travel is cheap and fully available.

Full information on all legs of The Falls Music & Arts Festival 2013 will be announced over the coming weeks.

The Falls Music & Arts Festival 2013

About: A world-class line-up of music, comedy and arts in a relaxed festival environment. The coastal locations are beautiful and all camping is free.

Events:

Dec 28 – Jan 01 in Lorne, VIC (est. 1993) 18+ event

Dec 29 – Jan 01 in Marion Bay, TAS (est. 2003) All ages

Dec 31 – Jan 03 in Byron Bay, NSW (est. 2013) 18+ event
