Continuing the celebrations for their 10th Anniversary, publishers Native Tongue are proud to announce the signing of Australian rising stars Kingswood. The four-piece rock outfit from Melbourne have just unveiled the highly anticipated debut albumMicroscopic Wars.

Kingswood have been working tirelessly since their inception to hone their craft, self-releasing their debut EP Change of Heart in 2012, featuring the singles ‘She’s My Baby’ and ‘Ohio’, both of which enjoyed love from alternative and commercial radio across the country.

With their signature rock swagger, DIY spirit and contagious energy, Kingswood headed to Nashville to work with Vance Powell, the Grammy Award winning purveyor of obscure and eclectic rock and soul rarities – who has worked with the likes of Jack White, Jeff the Brotherhood and Arctic Monkeys – to record their debut LP, Microscopic Wars. Complimenting the production, mastering was completed in Nashville by the legendary Richard Dodd, consigliore and chief engineer for the likes of Rick Rubin and an intimidating resume of his own. The 13-track album explores a variety of sounds and features lead singles ‘Sucker Punch’ and ‘I Can Feel That You Don’t Love Me’.

Kingswood have toured with the likes of The Living End, Grinspoon and Aerosmith and played numerous festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, Groovin’ The Moo and Big Day Out. To coincide with the release of Microscopic Wars, Kingswood are currently on tour throughout Australia (dates below).

Kingwsood joins Native Tongue’s growing Australasian roster which includes the likes of Cut Copy, The Waifs, The Amity Affliction Oh Mercy, Calling All Cars, Gossling, Clairy Browne and the Bangin’ Rackettes, Gin Wigmore, Strange Talk, Dale Cornelius, Dialectrix, The Veils, Henry Wagons, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Plutonic Lab, The Black Seeds and The Phoenix Foundation to name but a few.

If Queenscliff Music Festival was a footballer, it would be someone like Scott West. The former Bulldog was a star, albeit an underrated one. But what set West apart was his consistency and his no nonsense approach to the game. In a similar vein, Queenscliff is the ultimate no frills festival. It is well run, impeccably positioned and a has knack of nailing a universally appealing lineup. This year, its 17th crack, was again a showcase of these very qualities that have turned QMF into one of the premier events on the Victorian festival calendar.

There is a beautiful simplicity to Queenscliff, both the festival and the town itself. Traffic is only a problem when leaving the Melbourne smog, parking is only an issue if you need to be with 15 feet of the festival gate, and a cold beer is only a challenge if you piss off the hard working ladies of The Espy. While a short music day, it often feels like the longest stretch of the festival, an early arrival presenting you with the chance to explore the township and its people, enjoy a deliciously clichéd walk along the beach, or simply sit in the pub with a delicately hidden beer.

The music starts before the sun stops, giving the illusion of summer despite the lack of warmth. It is an illusion that is easy to embrace, as many do. As we did. Vigilance is a must, because it is easy to get sucked into the golden (black) holes of the beer gardens and cafes. Before you know it, it’s 8pm and you’ve missed Chance Waters. But it doesn’t matter, because time moves at Oliver Tank pace here, slowly and carefully. And thus, the weekend has begun.

10 THINGS WE LOVED ABOUT QUEENSCLIFF 2013:

1) THE LIVING END. Ageless is a word that can be used a lot at QMF. Chris Cheney and co are, almost surprisingly, perfectly suited to that description. It’s hard to believe that Prisoner Of Society came out in my early high school years. On this night, they are as powerful as ever, ripping through the entire back catalogue and delivering a greatest hits set worthy of the headline spot.

2) A FULLY LICENSED QMF. Sure, we don’t need alcohol to have a good time. But it certainly helps our dancing. This year, there were no more overcrowded 18+ drinking spots. The bars were open, and you could drink your beer and see the stage at the same time. And the festival had never felt freer.

3) THE SCREAMING JETS. See Living End above. Awesome.

4) BLUE KING BROWN. Natalie Pa‘apa’a is a force of nature. Outspoken, political, and a brilliant frontwoman. And she has sick hair. The band are brilliant and the message is clear. And they make you dance like a moron.

5) CALAMARI. Whoever came up with the idea of an enormous cone of deep fried squid is a certified genius. From the bottom of my increasingly hefty stomach, thank you.

6) SASKWATCH/ THE MELBOURNE SKA ORCHESTRA. A tie for the funnest sets of the weekend. Horns, more horns, highly skilled rhythm sections, and then more horns. Nicky Bomba and his Ska Orchestra barely fit on the stage, and get thousands of grownups losing their shit to the Inspector Gadget theme. Saskwatch are one of the most exciting bands in Australia right now, and their set delivers in much the same way.

7) SPIDERBAIT. Welcome back, Kram, Janet and Whitt. And not a moment too soon. Again, see The Living End above. On Saturday night, Finley’s finest (sorry Crawf) played with the glee and abandon of early 90s Spiderbait, and Queenscliff responded like an early 90s rock kid. And it was awesome.

8) THE GUY I MET WHILST…Another Queenscliff staple. Meeting people. Weird and wonderful, or delightfully boring, you’ll find one of every kind. And we did. This year’s honours go to;

The dude I asked for a light and still had me bailed up 45 minutes later, where we moved between his grandkids and Patience from The Grates.

The dude in a dress, who we first spotted on Sunday morning dancing with a fence, and whom we later met on Sunday evening, and was surprisingly coherent and quite the storyteller.

The dude who kept congratulating everyone on their attractiveness.

The kid with the red ukulele. Legend.

9) ALL OF SUNDAY. So good. San Cisco did what they needed to do please their growing legion of Cisconians, and The Grates returned to form, led by the irrepressible Patience Hodgson. The after party is something everyone should experience. But, Sunday belonged to Miss Dallas Frasca and her men. The Pelican Bar, and Sundays in general to be honest, had never seen anything quite like this. A one woman, two man wrecking ball (without the Miley licking), that featured chair kicking, power chords, swearing, head banging, audience ‘encouragement’, and just excellent rock music of the highest order. One of the sets of the festival.

10) EVERYTHING. QMF has truly become a festival without an obvious weakness. The one festival that is effortlessly everything to everyone. The only thing it really needs to work on is the fact it has to end. And real life returns.

The whole weekend plays out with an inevitability that is anything but tedious. Such is its consistency, you know exactly what you are going to get from Queenscliff, and that is in no way a bad thing. And once it has finished, you know for sure that it is only 52 weeks until you can be together again.

This is Brother James’ debutante ball. Their presentation to the world. They’ve been peeking around the curtain, getting up the courage to take the steps out onto stage. And now they are! Working completely backwards, they have recorded an album, then thought ‘Well, I guess we should show people this thing.’

Don’t be fooled Brother James are anything but shy. With members from The Vasco Era, The Exploders, Rat & Co and Second Hand Heart, Brother James will smash their beer glasses blending a vintage of noisy garage rock and impassioned purpose.

‘Singalong’ is the lead single of their debut album that is due for release early 2014. Launching into high-velocity garage rock crescendos, lead vocalist Ted O’Neil taunts with urgency above crashing cymbals and guitars. ‘Singalong’ heaves between the gentle and fierce as they trundle out to peddle their wares.

An explosive tune with well-placed melodies Brother James gives a healthy nod to the past while pitching a hearty dose of gritty blues-rock. Performing at the Kennedys Creek Music Festival on October 26th and 27th with artists including The Murlocs, Fraser A Gorman & Big Harvest and Kashmere Club, Brother James cordially invite you to their debutante ball. They want to get messy and they want you to singalong.

After a sell-out debut earlier this month (featuring Paul Kelly and Bob Murphy at the top of their games) PRESENTATION NIGHT returns, by popular demand, to The Corner Hotel on Thursday 15th August. Put simply, the night is a conversation between a footballer who loves music, and a musician who loves football. It’s a once-in-a lifetime pairing between two greats in their respective fields.

Under the warm glow of the spotlight, TIM ROGERS (You Am I front man, great Australian songwriter, TV host, face of finals footy, life long Shinboner) and MATTHEW RICHARDSON (legendary Tiger, goal kicker, much loved commentator and music lover) come together to discuss their mutual love of music and footy at length in ways that are philosophical, funny and surprising.

Ably guided by music and sport obsessive FRANCIS LEACH (ABC Grandstand Breakfast), Presentation Night tackles the big issues: what similarities are there between the professional musician and the professional footballer? How do friendships form in footy and in music? We’ll take a look inside their kitbags, unearth some suprising trophies, talk about who scares them on the field or on stage. We’ll ask about Richo’s favourite albums and Tim’s favourite footballers – and much, much more.

Highlights of the first Presentation Night were many – Bob Murphy revealing his secret love for Lady GaGa; Paul Kelly playing a brand new song he’d finished that afternoon about the great Charles Perkins; a packed room sitting listening to vinyl spinning on stage together. It was a once-only experience for lovers of footy and music.

Their conversation will last longer than a tweet – and that’s the point. A bit of meandering and a touch of digression will be encouraged. It’s the equivalent of the slow food movement for Sherrin kickers and string strokers. It’s a chance to learn something new about the role that footy and music play in our protagonists’ lives, and with a bit of luck, maybe even a bit about how kicking a ball and writing songs can come to define us.

‘Presentation Night’ was born of desire to talk about two much-loved obsessions together in a public forum, and is an extension of the website of the same name. In a football and music-loving town where the two pursuits are so often followed with equal passion, it makes perfect sense. To have two greats in their field talk about their love of both capers together, gives us a chance to learn something new about them beyond the usual reportage of their endeavours. We can’t wait for a whole new take on it all with the towering talents of Richo and Rogers on stage together this time around.

THE FALLS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL, BYRON BAY!

The Falls Music & Arts Festival is hitting the road this December with their compass set towards the sunny shores of Byron Bay, New South Wales! The festival has been invited into the Shire by the local Byron Bay Council who have marked the event as a perfect fit for the idyllic beach town.

As an established fixture on both the Victorian and Tasmanian calendars, Falls Festival has been operating over the past 20 and 10 years in Lorne and Marion Bay respectively. The intimate size of each event allows for a beautiful community atmosphere fostered onsite, where days spent camping under the blanket of a stunning natural landscape are complimented by world class music and arts programming. Each event location has been carefully selected over time with an emphasis on regional destinations with stunning scenic, coastal surrounds.

“We’re really excited to be heading North and expanding this year, the Byron Bay location couldn’t be better suited to everything that has always encompassed Falls in Lorne and Marion Bay. Coastal and charming natural settings; a destination for our patrons to travel for.” Simon Daly, Festival Founder.

The Falls Music & Arts Festival has become a right of passage for many people across Australia with patrons returning year after year for their summertime holidays. This December, as Falls becomes thrice as nice, patrons will have a tricky decision on their hands – which destination to attend?

Marion Bay, TAS: December 29, 2013 – January 01, 2014

The Marion Bay site is picturesque, sitting right alongside one of the finest coastlines in the world. Taking a trip to Tasmania over summertime is the perfect way to experience all that the Apple Isle has to offer. The weather is fine, the terrain is beautiful, there is so much to see and do; with the foodies paradise Taste of Tasmania in full swing, MONA just a heartbeat away and the Sydney to Hobart taking pace – not to mention all of the stunning natural surrounds to be explored.

Byron Bay, NSW: December 31, 2013 – January 03, 2014

Look up ‘delightful beach town’ in the dictionary and Byron Bay is what you’ll find. Known for its relaxed beaches where the sand stretches beyond vision with waves that are near perfect. Drenched with mellow charms and the heart of a small town, 2013 will mark Falls’ maiden voyage to the area!

Lorne, VIC: December 28, 2013 – January 01, 2014

Located just off the winding beauty of the Great Ocean Road, Lorne is where Falls all began. Set amongst the mountaintops of the ancient Otway Rainforest surrounded by tall gums and green gullies, it’s a magical place to spend your days camping. Take some time either side of the festival to walk the trails and explore the native areas.

Any one of these three choices will make for an exciting summer break. The time to start planning is now, while travel is cheap and fully available.

Full information on all legs of The Falls Music & Arts Festival 2013 will be announced over the coming weeks.

The Falls Music & Arts Festival 2013

About: A world-class line-up of music, comedy and arts in a relaxed festival environment. The coastal locations are beautiful and all camping is free.

Events:

Dec 28 – Jan 01 in Lorne, VIC (est. 1993) 18+ event

Dec 29 – Jan 01 in Marion Bay, TAS (est. 2003) All ages

For only the third time in its 20-year history, the Community cup has ended in a draw. With equal amounts of blood, sweat and beer spilt of the field by both teams it only seems fitting that a final goal after the siren to was balance the scores. With a huge record crowd of 10,000 + people supporting the game, it was a huge success for the charity partner Reclink, who’ll receive a record $100,000 windfall.

The annual football match between local musicians “The Rockdogs” and “The Megahertz” (a team comprised of PBS FM and Triple R presenters) was set in picture perfect conditions at Elsternwick Park, Melbourne.

Coming down to the wire, the final siren sounds with Triple R Breakfasters presenter Stew Farrell booting the levelling goal post siren to take the scores to 4.4.28 a piece.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard smashed out a rocking half-time set, followed by post-match entertainment by reformed rock legends Beasts of Bourbon. In lieu of the national anthem, Tim Rogers was joined by Kat Spazzy to perform ‘Pub’ by Cosmic Psychos.

Iconic Rockdog veteran Tim Rodgers from You Am I watched from the sidelines this year while Rockdogs coach Paul Kelly lead the way in true fashion. Liam “Banjo” O’Shannessy from The Rockdogs won the Stephen Connelly Award for best-on-ground for the second year running.

All proceeds go to Reklink, an organisation whose mission is to provide sporting, social and arts activities to enhance the lives of people experiencing disadvantage.
