Its a Balmy Sydney Night at the factory theatre in the downstairs bar of this very eclectic venue, Its only early when we wander up stairs to see the first band for the night.

Horrorwood mannequins were very energetic to start the night.. they rip through about 7-8 songs.. they have got the crowd very pumped to start the show… a very unique outfit, some great originals and then throw in a cover of negative creep that is just a ball tearer, a special
Guest joins them
On stage for their last track. The ox jumps up for a guest stint on vocals…

Secession are up second and start out heavy as we expect from one of Australia’s best metal outfits of the past 20 years, the Wollongong lads are tearing the factory theatre apart so quickly, this is a seasoned band, so tight together on stage. There 50 minute set seems to end too soon.. the crowd clearly want more, Chris gives a big shout out to his band and the crowd as it wrapped up, Segression are true crowd pleaders and ear bleeders!!! It clearly Shows that rocking out for 20 plus years can still gain you new fans, (Me I’ve been a fan for years ), and we all would have liked to see one or two more…

Earth caller are up before the HEIST….
Wow, Earth caller hit the stage with so much energy, with there singer spitting quick rhymes and heavy vocals at the same time it seems, a very tight 4 piece back him up with some bullshit heavy bass and drums combined with two guitars that Almost sound like there is 4 guitarists on stage at times,
Some big f’ u to the law songs by the lads as the lead singer bounces around stage as do the lads on guitar, such an energetic set from the Melbourne lads, Earth caller are a band to be recognized and not messed with, the power they produce in stage is endless.. A band to definatley check out…

It’s time for the HEIST NOW!!!!! Yewww
Setting up the lads look serious, Drew is limping around on stage(due to an ankle injury), but sound checking as loud as the 747s that were flying over too earlier, Bennys drum’s are getting set up with 354 go pros By Fearing Nothing Video producer Brian Cox on his super shiny pearl kit, Rtchie is fighting the fog machine to see his if his wireless shit is plugged in . DW is MIA

The crowd is swelling and getting louder! A lad yells out “cmon c!$ts, get this shit going”
I’m excited, I can’t lie…
soon the light go dark and a weird blue light shines as the lads appear on stage.
Andy (on Keys) Kicks in the intro to fightback and it’s in!! Ba ba BOOM!! As DW, Drew and Ritchie rip into the fightback and Zeke spits you gotta fight back take control.. the song gets the crowd going and the lads don’t stop as they flow straight into bullet, the crowd is going nuts at this stage.. bullet makes the crowd sway and get loose and sing as it stops Zeke thanks the crowd for the love.. as they bust into hands up high the crowd sing along to the chorus with Drew and DW.
The ridiculously big Back to base follows and the crowd goes nuts, BTB is clearly a crowd fave from the GOTSD, it’s infectious rhymes and big chorus are big with the fans.

Running away sees Zeke jump into the crowd and sing from atop a bar table, the crowd swell around him and sing along, as the lads busy out the big crowd favourite Crank the system, which is received To a thunderous roar, the Crowd feed off the energy that heist lads throw out, Drew is beaming with smiles but may be a painful smile as he has a busted ankle!!

Zeke speaks to the crowd after this and says I’ve been listening to this band for ever, I’ve been singing this track since ’98’, I knew one day I could sing with this band, as an oldie but a bloody goody Have your way busts out. Zeke and the boys absolutely smash this track, it’s flawless and the sound is amazing as the song nears the end zeke
Changes the lyrics to ‘if everything could ever feel This good for ever’ a well
Known track from some alien liking American band… (A Lil Foo for the thought)

Time for a breather and chat before they break into the Deepend and the massive Sweat/Swing, two amazing tracks to see back to back live as Zeke once again jumps into the crowd and stands aloft the bar table, it’s good to see as the band looks out and are beaming with smiles as the show is going off and the fans are digging the new sound/songs and lineup.

Zeke turns back to the band and says oh shit I forgot the set list… DW says Liberate, just cranks it, RIIIIIISSSEEEEEEEEEEE
Holy shit this gets the crowd pumped as, this will turn out to be the only song from IRCR, and the crowd respond with a banging little mosh around Zeke on the table as the lads on stage thrash this one out…

This leads straight into the massive crowd faves of Step back and Check your head which back to back are just huge, the Factory theater is pulsating with heavy guitar, big bass drums and vocal.. after these two classic heist songs finish Zeke says ok, we need to talk, they need to finish filming the wolves in your headspace clip and it will b done right now, Audri From Horrorwood mannequins dons the wolf mask and is thrust into the pit and crowd Surfs for a
Minute or two as the lads rip this track apartt and Brian Who has flown out from LA to finish this shoot.. ( I don’t think security liked this bit, ha ha)

As the crowd settles after thing track Benny and Drew sit on the drum riser for a well earned rest, as Zeke grabs an acoustic guitar and starts strumming and busts into the amazing ballad This truth, it’s a crowd sing along, suck a good track and as it builds the lads join in and boom, the ballad goes a bit heavy and then drops
Again.
That’s a bit of love there with that Fucking ballad says Zeke,”.
As DW and Zeke say thanx for helping film the wolves clip to the crowd,
They get back to LA chat about the filming off the next song we are about to here “. Fearing nothing, sees Zeke Jump back into the crowd, Drew is Almst done on 1 leg onstage! The red coopers are helping him bang that bass.

This next one is for the haters!! Once you flick the switch, you can’t turn it OFF ,,,,
Bang!! Crowd goes nuts as do the lads on stage!!! Benny bangs his kit so hard i
Feel Sorry for it… DW, Drew and Ritchie get loud and loose, security is even banging there heads now also!! The heist sound is so huge…

Zeke says sorry but this is our last one for he might but we be Back for a big tour next year.. Taking it Back to 8 miles high days with the massive PULSE, that DW and Drew just beam
As they smash it out, zeke makes this track his own. The crowd don’t no what is going on as they have been going nuts for 60 minutes plus already, Pulse just sends them even crazier in the pit.
Pulse is pulsating in the crowd and on stage… sad as but it has to come to and end, the band give big thanx to the crowd, DW does the hand sharks, Zeke is straight in the Merch stand. Benny goes awol for a smoke, Drew is found at the little creatures lounge!! Ha ha

All in all this was a massive show and a big welcome back from a good sydney crowd, such a good variety of songs from all albums, the lads can only fit so many tracks in 70 minutes. with 3 amzing support acts aslo in Horrorwood Mannequins, Segression and Earth Caller.

Looking at DW and Drew during the set they were absolutely beaming with smiles as they are re introducing there baby Almst, throw in the kid at the back who beats the bloody shit outta his pearl kit and the most energetic and best front man in Aus since Michael
Hutchence in Ezekiel ox, You have Superheist, a force to be reckoned with, an arsenal of bullshit heavy tracks and a few slower ballads to soothe the ears.

There still a few shows to go on this tour and have been promised more shows to come… don’t miss it hey, the lads pull out all stops and give u a big show that you won’t forget

Superheist set list 4-11-16 Factory theater, Sydney

There will be a convergence of forces when Father John Misty takes the stage at The 25th Meredith around Sunset on Saturday Night, and I’m going to momentarily resist adjectives: There’s the man himself, there’s his music, and his band. Then there’s his popularity, and there will be anticipation, and excitement. And there’s Sunset, on the second night, in

the Supernatural Amphitheatre: the sweet spot.

“If anyone knows what to do with a sweet spot, it’s Father John Misty”.

Expectation, convention be damned. Father John Misty has ascended. He’s not working from a script, there’s no blueprint. His lucid looseness undoes custom’s blouse. He deals in true fun and freedom, flourishing almost perversely from a deep bedrock of brutal raw honesty and enlightened directness. He can also be filthy, and hilarious. His live shows are beyond everything. He’s wilfully out of bounds,

Cause I love you honeybear

FJM has been the revelation of recent cultural times. “I Love You, Honeybear” is the album of the year, his songs have become sleeper anthems, his interviews and TV appearances are merely opportunities to do something remarkable, and live performances are an experience beyond the sum of their parts, albeit that those parts are truly special (I’ve spent the morning trying to obsessively accrue them: superb spiritual singer; songwriter for the ages; soulful, hip-shaking no-rules showman, frontman for a cracking band; satirist, social commentator; banter king; romantic poet; novelist, philosopher, perfumer – Innocence, by Misty exists because “I believe very strongly in how young women smell, getting involved is a big cornerstone in our inactive democracy” – teller

TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION

Where does Father John Misty start and Joshua Tillman end? Who cares.

BC

Josh Tillman was born May 3, 1981, and grew up in a deeply religious, “culturally oppressive” Evangelical Christian household in Rockville, USA. Until he was about 17, religious music was the only music he heard. His parents eventually permitted some that had a “spiritual theme”, like Bob Dylan, and a light was turned on.

He became a musician, worked odd jobs to fund it, was the drummer for Fleet Foxes and released solo albums under the name J Tillman, which were released by prestigious labels and well received. He was going ok.

But then came an epiphany.

“With the J Tillman touring I realised that I was more entertaining in my two minutes of between-song banter than I was in like five or six minutes of song, but I didn’t regard that banter as really being a moment of creativity, which ultimately it was…a very depressing realisation all of sudden became a very illuminating realisation, which was like ‘here’s where your gifts are, you don’t get to choose what you’re good at, use that’. Once I started doing that it reduced a lot of the dissidents that had previously been part of the creative process for me.”

What followed was a phase of highly imaginative output which supercharged his journey into the hearts and minds of modern lovers all over.

AD

On the first day, he created Father John Misty. In the first song as the new Him he sings:

Fun times in Babylon, momma they’ve just begun, Look out Hollywood, here I come.

It was the word, and the word was good. Ha!

He’s been on a wildly entertaining trip ever since, intrepidly chronicling his encounters with modern life’s small moments and big questions.

How many people rise and think
Oh good the stranger’s body’s still here
Our arrangement hasn’t changed
I grow more disappointing to you as my beauty warps and fades I suspect you feel the same

BYRON, SHELLEY, KEATS, MISTY

He can really sing, he can be hilarious, there’s rollicking good times in his shows, and the myth and mystique of the man are magnetic, but for me his ultimate gifts are his love songs.

This one completely kills me. It’s about (I think) absurd fickle chance, the tiny tenuous link that turns nothing into everything, and the nebulous dimensions of that diabolical deal:

And put an end to our endless progressive tendency to scorn Provincial concepts like your dowry and your daddy’s farm?

“I Love You, Honeybear is a concept album about a guy named Josh Tillman who spends quite a bit of time banging his head against walls, cultivating weak ties with strangers and generally avoiding intimacy at all costs.

In a parking lot somewhere he meets Emma, who inspires in him a vision of a life wherein being truly seen is not synonymous with shame, but possibly true liberation and sublime, unfettered creativity.

The album progresses, sometimes chronologically, sometimes not, between two polarities: the first of which is the belief that the best love can be is finding someone who is miserable in the same way you are and the end point being that love isn’t for anyone who isn’t interested in finding a companion to undertake total transformation with. I won’t give away the ending, but sex, violence, profanity and excavations of the male psyche abound.

My ambition, aside from making an indulgent, soulful, and epic sound worthy of the subject matter, was to address the sensuality of fear, the terrifying force of love, the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons in my own voice.

The massive, deranged shmaltz I heard in my head, and knew had to be the sound of this record, originated a few years ago while Emma and I were hallucinating in Joshua Tree; the same week I wrote the title track. I chased that sound for the entire year and half we were recording. The means by which it was achieved bore a striking resemblance to the travails, abandon and transformation of learning how to love and be loved; see and be seen. There: I said it. Blammo.”

With seven weeks left until Queenscliff Music Festival spills across one of Victoria’s most prized coastal locales, three weeks until ticket prices increase and a matter of days until the few remaining VIP tickets sell out, the festival announces two exceptional new international acts: Tim Chaisson from Canada (pictured) and Trevor Hall from the USA. QMF also wishes to advise that international artist Elliott Brood will no longer be performing at QMF, due to unforeseen circumstances. These two sought-after new acts will join the already extensive 2014 lineup, but before we introduce to you those two international talents who will add extra flair to the the 2014 experience, a BIG congratulations is in order for this year’s QMF Emerging Artist Grant Recipients: Aine Tyrrell and Sagamore!Aine Tyrrell has been granted $3000 toward marketing and publicity campaign for the the release of her debut album ‘Gypsy Daughter’, and Sagamore have been granted $4780 toward the recording of their debut album.QMF’s Emerging Artist Grant is just one example of the relationship between this festival and the community that hosts it, with an aim to kickstart the careers of local musicians in the regions of Geelong, Barwon South West and the Bellarine Peninsula. It is open to budding artists and is based on artistic merit and potential for sustainability beyond the funding period – there is no age limit. Importantly, it provides a platform for artists in the region to access recording time, new equipment or the right mentor for management or marketing. It’s just one big ol’ lump of good news this week from QMF, and the striking international talent new to this year’s line up is no small part of it.Roots--based singer/songwriter and multi--instrumentalist Tim Chaisson hits the QMF stage after a trail through 2013-2014 with a blaze of high points, including an East Coast Music Award for best Roots/Traditional Solo Recording of the year, a finalist spot in the Canadian Country Music Association’s Discovery Program, and a nomination for Singer/Songwriter Discovery of the Year Award presented by satellite radio SiriusXM’s lauded Coffee House channel. Now armed with a 2014 follow up to his award-winning 2012 album, produced by Bill Reynolds (Band Of Horses), Tim is one to circle on this year’s program!

Trevor Hall‘s rock-reggae tunes have featured on the Shrek the Third soundtrack and as the theme tune to American TV station CBS program ‘This Morning’, as well as making it onto a handful of music tastemaker charts. They’ve also caught the ear of other renowned artists and Trevor has joined sold-out tours with artists such as Steel Pulse, The Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, Matisyahu, Michael Franti and Colbie Callait. In 2013 at the age of 26, after touring consistently for ten years, Trevor decided to take a break from the stage and go on an extended pilgrimage to India. Afterwards he spilled all that he had learnt onto the page and into song. His next album is set to be released in 2014 – and Queenscliff gets to hear it live!

AVIATOR’Sown youthful, reckless abandon led them to create a raw, textured album that isn’t simply another progressive-hardcore record, rather an exploration of creativity and sound that finds the band pushing their craft further than ever before. ‘Head In The Clouds, Hands In The Dirt’ is the Boston band’s first full-length release.

‘Head In The Clouds, Hands In The Dirt’ broke a lot of new ground for us – rhythmically, harmonically and especially vocally – and we couldn’t be more proud of the result,” says guitarist Michael Russo. “We’ve never been content with limiting ourselves to any particular sound or style and I think this record reflects that.”

“Boston’s emotional hardcore darlings… The end result is a beautiful record that combines the band’s emotional hardcore roots with big, emotional hooks.” – Noisey/VICE magazine

“Boston’s Aviator are five men… who make loud prettiness… They’ve got the hardcore screams and the punk riffs we both have come to know and love together. But they also have the transcendently twinkling melodies over all that noise…”– Oh My Rockness

Boats is a new project by Melbourne artist Blake Paterson, who began writing songs 4 years ago with his acoustic guitar. He left Australia for Berlin, Barcelona & Helsinki to escape… and to be free to be creatively inspired. Having a deep motivation to create, Barcelona & Helsinki provided the relevant backdrop for what would become his debut single ‘Spider’s Soul’.

When he returned in late 2013, armed with a particular sound in mind he approached Joshua Delaney (Rat & Co, SMILE, Ben Wright Smith) to collaborate and produce his debut EP. ‘Spider’s Soul’ is a prelude from what’s to come from Boats.

‘Spider’s Soul’ stirs organic acoustic guitar into subtle electronic swells. Produced by Joshua Delaney and mastered by Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Oscar Key Sung, Fractures), Paterson croons and yearns for the past, exudes excitement for the future and wants something new, something right.

Paterson’s breathy vocals resonate with a certain pronounced vulnerability, both intimate and melancholic; ‘Spider’s Soul’ is a juxtaposition of warm and cold (Barcelona & Helsinki perhaps). The track moves in a linear direction propelled by electronic beats and a burning for ‘some girl’. Boats’ debut EP is due for release in the second half 2014.

The album was previewed earlier this week via THUMP who said, “There’s a beautiful sadness that runs throughout the record; a complex array of electronic and acoustic sounds that trigger an equally complex range of emotions. The title Post-Nature itself hints at our technologically detached lives and a strange new stage in our human evolution. What have we gained, and what have we lost? Lucian is a skilled musician and producer, but he’s not afraid to play with your heart and your mind either.”

Lucian explains – “Post-Nature is an examination of how we experience and interpret our lives in the modern era. As mankind progresses, we become more and more detached from the ideas and concepts that make us human. We feel immortal, and base our lives around hyper-rationality. Our lives are Post-Natural. These ideas also translate into how we listen to and how we create music. This is what inspired the creation and direction of the album. These concepts are not necessarily positive or negative, instead the album tries to look at these ideas objectively”.

Listen to the album here:

LUCIANBLOMKAMP creates music with a style that’s completely his own. Taking reference from a number of genres, he’s developed into a master of implementing samples, live instrumentation and vocals into his soundscapes. His musicianship has taken root over a number of years, with the classically trained artist being drawn to electronics because of the endless possibilities the medium provided.

LUCIANBLOMKAMP will launch Post-Nature in Melbourne on Friday 29th August at Boney with support from Planète, Emerse and I’lls DJs. He’ll also be showcasing at Bigsound on Wednesday 10th September at Brightside.

No better time than now to celebrate dumb Australia. Morally disassociated, reality TV style politics. $7 chips at the footy. The great Australian dream, a 35 year mortgage on a home that will be in the advanced stages of dilapidation in just 25. We could go on, but fuck it. Peep Tempel’s Tales is modern Oz and a collection of its inhabitants, brought to life with lowbrow sarcasm, loud guitars and generous sprinkle of cheese.

The Peep Tempel will release their second album Tales this October through their imprint Wing Sing Records on October 3. Written upstairs above a bar in windy West Melbourne, the three piece have explored some new territory on their second effort. The band’s humour is still intact, though possibly darker.

The album spits and snarls with distinctly Australian panache, but urges you to dance and drown yourself in its grotty, boisterous rock’n’roll.

“We wanted the record to have an element of ick”, the band explain, “To make you smile, but not without leaving a film across your teeth. It’s misogynistic, voyeuristic, racist, bigoted, over financed, drunk in Bali, pissing in it’s own mouth, boat stopping mayhem!”

The Peel Tempel formed as a two-piece in 2009. They recorded and release two 7” singles before praise for their live shows started piling up. Adjectives “raw”, “frenetic” and “unyielding” have been piffed at the band, fuelling continued laps of the country.

The Peep Tempel recorded their first album as a three-piece in 2011 and the debut snuck up on an unsuspecting public. “Disco punk, dance punk, punk, rock n roll, garage…whatever you wanna call it, this rules” Triple J’s Zan Rowe declared, while The Australian was similarly impressed; “Very near to rock and roll perfection”.

It’s that time of year again, the elation of waking up to an email telling you that you’re one of Aunties favourite people and you’ve got yourself a cherished spot in the ballot, not even caring what it costs, and knowing that everyone will be sucking up to you now, or the heartbreak of knowing the competition is now on to find / make a friend with spare tickets to buy.

I don’t envy you poor suckers, I’m in. For future reference, I take my coffee white with no sugar, thank you.

From Aunty:

24-Meredith is still proudly BYO, with no commercial sponsors, the No D!ckhe@d Policy, One Stage Fits All, world’s-best-practice facilities and all the marvelocities of the lush, spacious Funpark that is the Supernatural Amphitheatre. Last year we decided Meredith would be Five Hundred Folks Fewer, to ensure abundant Time & Space, it was niiiice; so that stays as is. There’s only one type of ticket: The Full Meredith Experience is $318.80 + $10 booking + $7 post; all camping and parking included.

WHO’S PLAYING?
This year we have gone further, dreamt harder, listened longer and heard morer in our Eternal Quest for the ultimate 3-day, 2-night, 4-D cascading audio-visual rollercoaster on the One and Only Stage with the Evolving Atmospherics of the Supernatural Amphitheatre and Mother Nature on the lights. The Aim is simply to find The Best; to gather artists that are the best at what they do – not just by reputation, but in actual real life. It’s a never-ending labour of endless love, and it’s borne some very special fruit – A Magic One-off Collection where The Experience = Everything.

24-Meredith is a totally fresh cast – all brand new to the Supernatural Amphitheatre – bar one special case.

I remember in the mid 90’s, Mr Allen teaching us the lyrics to ‘Being Around’ by The Lemonheads in our music class. The booger line was the greatest line in a song I think I’d ever heard up to that point in my life. It still rates quite highly, and I quite look forward to slurring the line come early December.

The War On Drugs
Ty Segall
