AVIATOR’Sown youthful, reckless abandon led them to create a raw, textured album that isn’t simply another progressive-hardcore record, rather an exploration of creativity and sound that finds the band pushing their craft further than ever before. ‘Head In The Clouds, Hands In The Dirt’ is the Boston band’s first full-length release.

‘Head In The Clouds, Hands In The Dirt’ broke a lot of new ground for us – rhythmically, harmonically and especially vocally – and we couldn’t be more proud of the result,” says guitarist Michael Russo. “We’ve never been content with limiting ourselves to any particular sound or style and I think this record reflects that.”

“Boston’s emotional hardcore darlings… The end result is a beautiful record that combines the band’s emotional hardcore roots with big, emotional hooks.” – Noisey/VICE magazine

“Boston’s Aviator are five men… who make loud prettiness… They’ve got the hardcore screams and the punk riffs we both have come to know and love together. But they also have the transcendently twinkling melodies over all that noise…”– Oh My Rockness

Boats is a new project by Melbourne artist Blake Paterson, who began writing songs 4 years ago with his acoustic guitar. He left Australia for Berlin, Barcelona & Helsinki to escape… and to be free to be creatively inspired. Having a deep motivation to create, Barcelona & Helsinki provided the relevant backdrop for what would become his debut single ‘Spider’s Soul’.

When he returned in late 2013, armed with a particular sound in mind he approached Joshua Delaney (Rat & Co, SMILE, Ben Wright Smith) to collaborate and produce his debut EP. ‘Spider’s Soul’ is a prelude from what’s to come from Boats.

‘Spider’s Soul’ stirs organic acoustic guitar into subtle electronic swells. Produced by Joshua Delaney and mastered by Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Oscar Key Sung, Fractures), Paterson croons and yearns for the past, exudes excitement for the future and wants something new, something right.

Paterson’s breathy vocals resonate with a certain pronounced vulnerability, both intimate and melancholic; ‘Spider’s Soul’ is a juxtaposition of warm and cold (Barcelona & Helsinki perhaps). The track moves in a linear direction propelled by electronic beats and a burning for ‘some girl’. Boats’ debut EP is due for release in the second half 2014.

The album was previewed earlier this week via THUMP who said, “There’s a beautiful sadness that runs throughout the record; a complex array of electronic and acoustic sounds that trigger an equally complex range of emotions. The title Post-Nature itself hints at our technologically detached lives and a strange new stage in our human evolution. What have we gained, and what have we lost? Lucian is a skilled musician and producer, but he’s not afraid to play with your heart and your mind either.”

Lucian explains – “Post-Nature is an examination of how we experience and interpret our lives in the modern era. As mankind progresses, we become more and more detached from the ideas and concepts that make us human. We feel immortal, and base our lives around hyper-rationality. Our lives are Post-Natural. These ideas also translate into how we listen to and how we create music. This is what inspired the creation and direction of the album. These concepts are not necessarily positive or negative, instead the album tries to look at these ideas objectively”.

Listen to the album here:

LUCIANBLOMKAMP creates music with a style that’s completely his own. Taking reference from a number of genres, he’s developed into a master of implementing samples, live instrumentation and vocals into his soundscapes. His musicianship has taken root over a number of years, with the classically trained artist being drawn to electronics because of the endless possibilities the medium provided.

LUCIANBLOMKAMP will launch Post-Nature in Melbourne on Friday 29th August at Boney with support from Planète, Emerse and I’lls DJs. He’ll also be showcasing at Bigsound on Wednesday 10th September at Brightside.

No better time than now to celebrate dumb Australia. Morally disassociated, reality TV style politics. $7 chips at the footy. The great Australian dream, a 35 year mortgage on a home that will be in the advanced stages of dilapidation in just 25. We could go on, but fuck it. Peep Tempel’s Tales is modern Oz and a collection of its inhabitants, brought to life with lowbrow sarcasm, loud guitars and generous sprinkle of cheese.

The Peep Tempel will release their second album Tales this October through their imprint Wing Sing Records on October 3. Written upstairs above a bar in windy West Melbourne, the three piece have explored some new territory on their second effort. The band’s humour is still intact, though possibly darker.

The album spits and snarls with distinctly Australian panache, but urges you to dance and drown yourself in its grotty, boisterous rock’n’roll.

“We wanted the record to have an element of ick”, the band explain, “To make you smile, but not without leaving a film across your teeth. It’s misogynistic, voyeuristic, racist, bigoted, over financed, drunk in Bali, pissing in it’s own mouth, boat stopping mayhem!”

The Peel Tempel formed as a two-piece in 2009. They recorded and release two 7” singles before praise for their live shows started piling up. Adjectives “raw”, “frenetic” and “unyielding” have been piffed at the band, fuelling continued laps of the country.

The Peep Tempel recorded their first album as a three-piece in 2011 and the debut snuck up on an unsuspecting public. “Disco punk, dance punk, punk, rock n roll, garage…whatever you wanna call it, this rules” Triple J’s Zan Rowe declared, while The Australian was similarly impressed; “Very near to rock and roll perfection”.

Just when you think you have captured Kingswood’s sound between your sonic fingertips, it’s gone – twisting, changing shape and surprising you once more. Their debut album ‘Microscopic Wars’ is cinematic in scope – from the finer details of percussion to the sweeping storytelling in its lyricism. The recording of their debut album saw the band jet off to Nashville, TN, to Blackbird Studio where it was cut to tape amidst the warmth of analogue and whisky.Vocalist Fergus Linacre, guitarist Alex Laska, bassist ‘Mango’ Hunter and drummer Justin Debrincat have been working tirelessly since their inception to hone their craft, self-releasing their debut EP ‘Change of Heart’ in 2012, and singles ‘She’s My Baby’ and ‘Ohio’, both of which enjoyed love from alternative and commercial radio across the country. With their signature rock swagger, DIY spirit and contagious energy, Kingswood have played over one hundred shows in the past year, equally at home on the main stage for Splendour in the Grass or the Big Day Out, as they are playing for the Defense Forces in Afghanistan, or obliterating small clubs and pubs across Australia.

“I don’t aim to write for a specific sound, but when I’m writing I try to imagine the sound,” guitarist Alex says. “I want it to always be varied. When we workshop stuff, we work on the raw materials, the foundations. Then someone will do something – like Ferg will be singing phonetically, or the guitar will accidently hit something wrong – and you hear a weird harmonic or something becomes distorted and it’s great. That’s what music is about. It’s a collision of these energies, where these miraculous things happen and you just know that’s what it should be.”

It was this freewheeling spirit, boldness and quest for greatness that saw the band take the drafted record to Nashville to work with Vance Powell at the world renowned Blackbird Studio. Powell, the Grammy Award winning purveyor of obscure and eclectic rock and soul rarities – who has worked with the likes of Jack White, Jeff the Brotherhood and Arctic Monkeys – finished the final cuts live to tape. In the heart of ‘Music City’ Tennessee, the band finished the recording and mixing in Vance’s studio Sputnik Sound, which Alex describes fondly as ‘Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory of Musical Instruments’. Complimenting the production, mastering was completed in Nashville by the legendary Richard Dodd, consigliore and chief engineer for the likes of Rick Rubin and an intimidating resume of his own.

From the moody opening promise of ‘All Too Much’ to the whistling fade-out on ‘Chronos’,‘Microscopic Wars’ could be the soundtrack to one hell of a movie. Going in any and all directions as the band see’s fit, the album weaves influences as far and wide as the twang of surf guitars, lilting string arrangements, dusty 60’s blues records, stadium rock to the unnamable instruments found in Blackbird’s clandestine studios. Any other band would have stuck to a particular sound rather than fuse their inspirations, but in Kingswood’s talented hands, the diversity becomes iconic.

‘Ohio’ draws you in with Midwestern drawl, as ‘Sucker Punch’ rains down its furious drumbeats, while ‘Tremor’ weaves a fairground jingle with powerful of jangling pianos, fuzz bass and slide guitar. Rumbling drums juxtapose with melancholic refrains on ballad ‘Eye of the Storm’ before the guitar climaxes to a dizzying crescendo, while the reverb-soaked Moog synth lines entwine with Alex’s vocals on the simmering soul rock number ‘ICFTYDLM’. While there is much of‘Microscopic Wars’ that conflicts and contrasts, the album in underpinned by its ingenious narrative twists that make it equally able to soundtrack stunt-car-slasher flicks and tender scenes of star crossed-love.

‘Microscopic Wars’ stand out quality is the fervor and passion that each track is delivered with, which is rapidly becoming Kingswood’s trademark.

‘Humdrum Star’

“We find that we live on an insignificant planet of a hum-drum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people. We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and the depth of our answers.” – Carl Sagan
There are many voices, places and influences swirling in Mosman Alder. The Brisbane six-piece may have unified their debut album under the sweeping title taken from the life’s-work of an ingenious 80’s scientist and astronomer-turned-author, but for the most part, inspiration for the album was found slightly closer to home.

Weaving the band mates’ experiences of travelling overseas, the bitter sweetness of returning home, online pen-pals, sharing dog-eared books from Japanese expressionists, navigating through shyness and Arts schools and the inevitable searching that comes with figuring out life through your early twenties is underpinned by the band’s love of music, art, storytelling and ultimately, their own friendship.

Much of ‘Humdrum Star’ may have been written on German guitars and composed on separate trips across the globe as far flung as South East Asia and Scotland, but was performed and written, simply, by a band who look forward to practicing together.

Comprising of Valdis Valodze and Jackson Muir, who both sing and play guitar, pianist Katarzyna Wiktorski and violinist Robyn Dawson, who also make up the delicate back-up singing, bassist Liam Haug and drummer Damian Wood, like all good friends,Mosman Alder’s stories vary as to how they met – share houses and supermarket jobs aside – as well as differences in musical background as varied as heavy metal and classical training – they have together struck on the rare ability to combine their musical and song writing talents to make a distinctive sound.

While some bands would be out of their depth with a large ensemble, particularly the commanding use of piano and violin, Mosman Alder envelope the unusual instruments seamlessly and create a densely lush sound through the chaos of six members that shines just as brightly on headphones as watching the band perform live.

While the band’s debut EP ‘Burn Bright’ saw them exchanging yard work for a practice space, ‘Humdrum Star’ was recorded in the studio with Something for Kate’s accomplished front man and respected producer Paul Dempsey. Valdis accredits the stripped-back and refined new style to his tutelage – encouraging the band to swap instruments and singers for a textured and broader sound. After the album was polished, Paul announced the project to the world; remarking Mosman Alder were “…one of the best bands I’ve heard come out of Australia in a really long time”.

As lit by the kaleidoscopic colourful charms of sweeping violins, stripped back drums and winding guitars as it is by the sepia tones of sadness throughout the lyrics,‘Humdrum Star’ is an elegant and twisted coming of age tale.
The buoyant melody on ‘Germland (of Julien Charbonneau)’ juxtaposes with the brooding tale of loneliness as the beat carries Valdis to a happier place, while the swirling, rain-drop-like piano pours through Jackson’s words on ‘Home Again’ – the steady drum keeping the song afloat.

‘Colours’ and ‘Try Your Luck’ strikingly mark the band’s contrasting and fearless nature, the former delicate and metaphorical lyrics soaked in reverb and bass and the latter an unflinching tale of a chance meeting and love interest – the call and response refrain of Valdis and Robyn working perfectly for a dream-pop anthem, while Katarzyna provides the subtly sweet harmony.

On the stripped back and raw ‘Shine’ the reserved instrumentation allows Valdis’ baritone howl to drive the smooth song while they invoke their psychedelic-influences on tongue-in-cheek slow burner ‘God is Pissing on You’.

Armed with Valdis’ extraordinary baritone, Jackson’s raw, romantic voice and Robyn and Katarzyna’s honeyed backing vocals, set across the diverse instruments and melodies together weave a narrative as personal and mysterious as an open journal with illegible handwriting.

Whether it’s due to Mosman Alder’s unearthly influences, unflinchingly personal songs or bright and bold storytelling – one thing is for sure about this band and their courageous album ‘Humdrum Star’ – they’re going to be around for a long time to come.
Praise for Mosman Alder

“…. rich instrumental hooks again compliment the characteristic deep vocals and uplifting arrangements which have held the band in such high regard in recent times.”
★★★★★ – City and Sound

“A bold, twinkling hook kicks off ‘Germland (of Julien Charbonneau)’, doubling as a nifty reintroduction to Mosman Alder… ‘Germland’ is the first taste – a swooning intersection of Valdis Valodze’s supple baritone, Robyn Dawson’s prominent violin and baroque, bittersweet indie rock.”
Mess and Noise

“The track reiterates the beautiful melodies recognizable in their 2012 debut EP, Burn Bright. The single, although lyrically dark, retains a great air of hopefulness and vocal work that is undoubtedly enchanting.”
Drawing on post-punk, guitar pop and indie music from the early 80s through to today, their influences manifest themselves not sonically or aesthetically, but in the idea of the song as a document, be it of an idea or a moment in time, to which the performer submits; theirs is an attempt to reach the listener through a propulsive beat, through an urgent, allusive turn of phrase, through directness, even if that directness regards ambivalence and ennui; even where it regards 18th century German literature. The fact that their chosen means of achieving this result is through chiming guitars and squalling noise, by turns reminiscent of The Church’s more sublime moments and Radiohead’s more abrasive ones, is immaterial. The central element is songcraft; a devotion to the language of chords and melody, and it is this devotion that sets them apart from their peers.
