Jack, Donovan and G. Love

Long time friends and collaborators Jack Johnson, Donovan Frankenreiter and G. Love have come together to give us “Some Live Songs EP”. Fans will not be disappointed. It’s everything you would expect from this trio, lighthearted guitar-pop-folk that is never going to change the world but is always going to put a smile on your face. The songs will be familiar to fans. “Rodeo Clowns”, which has already popped up all over the place, is there, along with “Free”, from Frankenreiter’s self-titled album. G. Love’s “Sunshine”, Donovan’s “Heading Home” and Jack’s “Mud Football” are there as well, never really pushing any boundaries, but always enjoyable. These are basically stripped back versions of the original songs. The best parts are often delivered by Zach Gill and his accordion. Gill is a very welcome addition to this well establish trio.

The absolute highlight of the EP is the closing track “Girl I Wanna Lay You Down”. Performed by Johnson and Gill live on stage in Boston, it is true musical bliss. Like Jack himself says on its introduction, it’s “a real happy song”. Originally written by Gill for his band the Animal Liberation Orchestra, “Girl I Wanna Lay You Down” is worth buying the EP for on its own. Combining Jack’s guitar and Zach’s accordion, it is simple, pure, laid back, happy music at its best.

While nothing on this EP will surprise and no song really pushes the boundaries, it is still a pleasure to listen to. 4 mates jamming together in a room, creating great music, and putting smiles on people’s faces. Simple, easy to listen to, fun, everything you would expect from these guys.
