Katy Steele lines up her new solo project
Katy Steele will return to Australia for a limited date solo tour.
The lead singer of Perth band Little Birdy will head out on tour this May and June.
The tour will be the singer’s first local shows since relocating to New York earlier this year.
“I am very excited to announce that I’ll be back sooner than later for a few little intimate shows. I cant wait. So you’ll be hearing mainly new songs and of course a few favourites….if you like??” Steele said.
“Playing solo is very liberating and very, very different. It’s like another world…”
She said the move to New York has not only challenged her, but helped her as an artist.
“Not only did I leave my hometown, but I am spending time away from my band of the last seven years to essentially ‘grow’ as an artist,” Steele said.
“That decision was really hard. To leave a comfortable, reassuring place must seem crazy to some. To me, it was something I needed to do. I need to feel engulfed, I need to feel pressured, alive, challenged, pushed. And I do.”
The move has already inspired her to create new work.
“I already have a bunch of new songs but I really want to take this project in a new direction,” she said.
“I know everyone says that, but I am actually really going to have to, without even trying. I’ve never made a solo record.
“Either way it’s going to be “mine”. It’s an exciting thought, the amount of energy I’ll be putting into it. I’m also trying to step away from it once in a while. I think that’s important.”
In February, Little Birdy announced they would take a break before beginning work on their fourth studio album.
The break should not be considered as the band splitting, but merely a chance for band members to concentrate on other projects, band drummer Matt Chequer said.
