MELBOURNE ZOO ANNOUNCES THE 2013

ZOO TWILIGHTS PROGRAM

We’re set for another great summer of music with the 2013 Melbourne Zoo Twilights series back again, offering an abundance of award-winning artists performing in the magical setting of the Melbourne Zoo.

Starting off the 2013 Twilights series will be none other than ARIA Award winner MISSY HIGGINS on Friday, January 25th.

This season’s Zoo Twilights will feature a variety of amazing acts including Clare Bowditch, Leo Sayer, Lisa Mitchell, Stonefield, Husky, Justice Crew, and The Bamboos with Tim Rogers, so there’ll be something for everyone this summer.

The Zoo has invited some of the best local musical talent to join in the fight against extinction by supporting our conservation efforts to save local threatened species.  All proceeds help Zoos Victoria fight wildlife extinction.

Friday 25th January – Missy Higgins
With Hayden Calnin

The wonderful Missy Higgins has been a part of the Australian music scene since being Unearthed on Triple J in her final year of high school, and she went on to sell millions of albums, winning ARIA Awards and touring the world several times over. After a five year hiatus, Missy is back with her new album, the award winning ‘The Ol Razzle Dazzle’. This year Missy has toured the country and will wrap up her touring with a special performance at Twilights to kick off the season.

Saturday 26 January – Justice Crew
With Kate Alexa
We knew they had the moves – now the Justice Crew are proving skilled practitioners at the mic. With a string of best-selling singles and high-profile collaborations to their credit, Australia’s Justice Crew are fast evolving. Come and see the country’s most thrilling dance troupe this summer!

Friday 1 February – Kate Miller–Heidke
With Kim Churchill 
Without question, Kate Miller-Heidke produces some of the most gloriously elastic vocal chords in contemporary music. Following double-platinum sales for her last album (2008’s Curiouser), Kate Miller-Heidke returns with Nightflight, her first solo album in three years.  Well known for her amazing live performances, Kate will definitely be a highlight on the Twilights calendar.

Saturday 2 February – Clare Bowditch
With Royal Jelly Dixieland Band
Clare Bowditch is a singer, writer, and master storyteller who has had top ten hits, toured the world playing for hundreds of thousands of people, and written songs with many of Australia’s greats. In 2012, Clare graced our television screens in her first acting role with Channel 10’s Offspring and also released her fifth solo album, “The Winter I Chose Happiness”, in early September 2012.

Friday 8th February – Lisa Mitchell
With Georgia Fair
Lisa Mitchell burst onto the music scene with a string of successful independently released EPs before her debut album ‘Wonder’ became an instant classic and was awarded the Australian Music Prize for Album of The Year. Lisa embarked on a non- stop touring schedule including tours with international’s Mumford & Sons, headlining her own theatre shows and a sold out national Heavenly Sounds tour of Churches prior to the release of her sophomore album, the much acclaimed ‘Bless This Mess’ released in October 2012.

Saturday 9 February – Babba
Touted as the most musically accurate ABBA tribute band, we’re pleased to welcome back BABBA to our Twilights program. Performing since 1994, BABBA have played to packed audiences in Australia, Asia and New Zealand, including Zoo Twilights crowds!

Friday 15 February – Melbourne Ska Orchestra
With Mighty Duke & The Lords

An explosive celebration of music will unfold this summer when the Melbourne Ska Orchestra hits the Zoo Twilights stage. Fronted by Nicky Bomba (Bomba, John Butler Trio, Bustamento), with his professional, fun and impulsive conducting style, Melbourne Ska Orchestra is a fun-loving big band experience, with music from the golden ska period of 1963 through to modern day classics.

Saturday 16 February – Leo Sayer
With Callee
The legendary Leo Sayer is set to captivate audiences again this season at the Zoo Twilights. Leo is a busy man who loves his life and work, and he lives for pleasing audiences and music lovers around the globe. With a new studio album in the works for next year, along with concert tours planned for Korea, the UK, and New Zealand, Leo has also created a new Christmas song “Coming Home For Christmas” which has just been released on the Myer ‘Spirit Of Christmas’ album for this festive season.

Friday 22 February – Stonefield and Owl Eyes
The four Findlay sisters who make up Stonefield have had quite a ride since they started playing music only a few years ago. From winning Triple J’s Unearthed competition, they’ve gone on to being invited to play at the Glastonbury Festival in 2011. The girls have since toured the both nationally and internationally and will bring their explosive 70s -infused rock and blues to Zoo Twilights.

Owl Eyes (aka Brooke Addamo) has had a massive 2012 with a sold-out national headline tour, an extensive national regional tour with Stonefield, and the successful release of her third EP ‘Crystalised’.  Now with her brand new album ‘NIGHTSWIM’  ready to be released in 2013, Owl Eyes will be co-headlining Zoo Twilights with touring buddies Stonefield for this special show.

Friday 1 March – The Bamboos with Tim Rogers
With Electric Empire
Bringing together two iconic Australian artists in Tim Rogers (You Am I) and The Bamboos (Australia’s greatest Soul/Funk export), it’s The Rock N Soul Medicine Show! These raucous merchants of Soul and Rock ‘n Roll will be rambling into town, peddling musical elixirs new and old alongside some carefully hand-picked classic covers.

Saturday 9 March – Timomatic
With Special Guest and Bonnie Anderson 
Appearing as grand finalist on Channel Seven’s 2011 series of Australia’s Got Talent  Timomatic has since achieved triple platinum sales for his debut single and second single, was nominated for ARIA Song of the Year, Channel V Artist of the Year and has toured the country with international acts including Salt-N-Pepa and Janet Jackson. With support from a special guest to be announced and Bonnie Anderson this show will be the perfect way to wrap up the Twilights Series for 2013.
