Downloaded Songs To Hit ARIA Chart

The Australian Record Industry Association will rank the top-selling songs downloaded from the internet for the first time on Sunday. Mobile phone ring tones are expected to be added to the chart in the next two months.

The announcement comes as music download sales threaten to overtake CD sales. Customers spent $8 million buying five million digital tracks last year, compared with 7.4 million sales of CD singles, down almost 20 per cent.

The change has been made to reflect the way Australians are now buying music. Industry heavyweights have previously warned that the digital revoloution could see the end of the CD single.

The chart will be formed from sales of music through providers such as Apple iTunes, BigPond Music, destra music, ninemsn music and Soundbuzz.
