16th Queenscliff Music Festival 2012
November 23rd, 24th & 25th
Second Lineup Announcement
Queenscliff Music Festival hits Olympic heights with their second lineup announcement for 2012.
Not since the lighting of the Olympic flame in London has there been so much anticipation for a single three-day event, running November 23rd, 24th and 25th! Requiring more clandestine negotiations than a Flag Bearer reveal at the Opening Ceremony, it’s time to unveil those garish uniforms and step out on the Parade of Nations – ‘cause the 16th Annual Queenscliff Music Festival’s Second Lineup Announcement for 2012 is finally here!
First up on the winners’ podium for QMF are Mia Dyson, The Fauves, Jordie Lane and Loon Lake. Packing a compelling voice and bluesy picking, Mia Dyson brings a brand new album – the stark and soulful ‘The Wonder’ – to delight Queenscliff festival-goers. The Fauves are firm crowd favourites and self-appointed “best band in Australia”, still scooping 6 out of 5 for album reviews after all these years. That’ll come in handy for our medal tally. Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Jordie Lane shrugs off his Nudie suit (he just played Gram Parsons in Grevious Angel) to thrill audiences with his particular take on folk and alt-country music in the best locale the surf coast has to offer. In partnership with The Seed Fund, QMF is pleased to announce the exciting addition of Loon Lake to the bill. Triple J faves and winners of their ‘Big Sound’ competition, Loon Lake make music that’s fast, honest and minus pretension, and with three brothers in the band it’s bound to go off.
High performance funk & soulsters Deep Street Soul will join indie-infused soul from Ngaiire and scorchin’ garage rock duo Jackson Firebird to bring the Athlete’s Village party atmosphere to a head in Queenscliff. Money For Rope, Lloyd Spiegel, and the delightfully-named Butterfly Boucher (from Missy Higgins’ band) are all set to time-trial with punk rock Eurodiscovites, The DC3.
Medalling with honours will be swamp rockers Howlin’ Steam Train, and that slice of badass called Kira Puru & The Bruise alongside Halfway To Forth (banjo-driven brothers of Diesel).Keshie’s high-vibing happy music, raucous blues rockers The Joe Kings, Tom Richardson Project and The Bakers Digest will surely bring down the stadium.
Add to the mix, the following outstanding musical athletes: Juan Alban, Sweethearts, Shaun Kirk, Wishful (Paul Kelly’s daughters), Luke Legs & The Midnight Specials, Lily & King, ukulele lady Al Parkinson, Alister Turrill, Catherine Sanzaro & Izzy Losi (2011 QMF Perpetual Scholarship Winners), Jamie Pye, Inertia Brass Band, Yirrmal and the Yolngu Boys (Gurrumul’s kin), Tides of Welcome and Tané (2011 QMF Busking Competition Winner) and you have a medal tally worth crowing about.
Medal Winners already announced to date on the QMF lineup are: Missy Higgins, The Cat Empire, Gurrumul, You Am I, Something For Kate, Baby Animals, British India, Ian Moss, TZU, Owl Eyes, Diesel, Emma Louise, Shannon Noll, The Beards, Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes, Electric Empire, King Cannons, Pinky Beecroft & The White Russians, Chase The Sun, Ruby Boots, Kingswood, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, plus All The Colours.
55 acts, 150 performances across 5 stages in the festival precinct as well as on the “QMF Family Express” historic train and music stages in the towns unique and beautiful venues – The Queenscliff Inn, Vue Grand Hotel, Lombardys on Hesse and Stoked on Hesse.
For those living on the Mornington Peninsula, the Sorrento-Queenscliff Ferry is offering festivalgoer’s a great deal – take your car on the ferry to the Festival and your friends ride for free.
A snapshot of just some of the incredible artists from this second announcement…
Mia Dyson
Mia Dyson returns to Australia and includes QMF on her road trip this November. Her new album, ‘The Wonder’ is due for release later this month. Recorded in Ojai, California in January and fan-funded through Pledge Music, it’s sure to be something both beautiful and compelling. Rolling Stone agrees – “A stark, soulful wonder, driven by her husky temptress of a voice and her very spare, very bluesy guitar picking and strumming.”
The Fauves
The Fauves’ lengthy tenure of 24 years has resulted in them outlasting several generations of rock journalists. Just as well the fans are still alive and well. ‘German Engines’ is the Fauves 11th album – keeping it short and sharp, it’s just 8 songs tailored for the nano-second breadth of the modern human attention span. The long and short of it is they’re playing QMF.
Jordie Lane
Jordie Lane is a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter, widely regarded as a leading light of the Australia’s folk and alt-country music scenes. He’s recently channeled Gram Parsons in Grievous Angel, and his live shows can travel from comedy show, to folk concert, to rock n roll gig all in the space of two songs. Come along for the ride.
Loon Lake
In partnership with The Seed Fund, QMF is pleased to announce the addition of Loon Lake to the bill. Triple J faves with killer singles ‘In The Summer’ and ‘Into The Office’ as well as winners of their ‘Big Sound’ competition, Loon Lake make music that’s fast, honest and minus pretension. This Country Victorian five-piece (3 outta five are brothers) bring the crazy hooks, raw fun and high energy to their sets. Queenscliff will prove no exception.
Ngaiire
Originally from PNG, Ngaiire is quite simply a knockout. From working with Paul Mac, Itch-E & Scratch-E, as well as Blue King Brown, she’s now set to strike out on her own with a debut album. Bringing her unique live experience – musically and theatrically – and a voice of powerful and soulful ‘mourning’, Ngaiire is not to be missed.
Jackson Firebird
Rugged, explosive, full-tilt Aussie rock & roll – Jackson Firebird have it in spades. Mildura garage rockers Dale Hudak and Brendan Harvey have delivered one hell of a mighty wallop in the form of Cock Rockin’, the duo’s high-octane debut. This is the band that Lady Ga Ga got kicked offstage at Cherry for.
Butterfly Boucher
Nashville/Melbourne based singer/songwriter, Butterfly Boucher comes to Queenscliff with her eponymous album and a truly adventurous and experimental spirit. This multi-instrumentalist crafts smart indie pop with alt-rock muscle, inhabiting a world of pure creativity that’s been further sparked by her recent collaborations. Currently touring as part of Missy Higgins’ touring band, we’re delighted she’s with us this year.
